Many young people with disabilities throughout the UK miss out on the opportunities provided by computer-based games and leisure software because they can't control joysticks or other gaming devices. As a result they are doubly frustrated - they can't play the real game or sport, or the computer game version.
There is a range of mainstream and specialist access devices and software that can potentially solve this problem and enable many youngsters with disabilities to have the same opportunities to play games on their computers as everyone else.
GameOn was started as a project at The ACE Centre, a specialist centre which offers multidisciplinary assessments for young people with physical and communication disabilities, training for professionals and parents, and is involved in cutting-edge research in the field of disability and technology.
A group of youngsters, all with disabilities, reviewed these games and helped in the creation of the website. It is hoped that the information on this site will help other young players to find games that are suitable for their interests and abilities. Each game review provides information about how a game is controlled, how fast it is, how much it is likely to cost etc., which saves our players from having to spend time/money on games that would not be suitable for them in the first place. Our 'Comments' section provides a format where players can keep adding tips and tricks for eachother.
We are very grateful to the generous funding contributions that made this project possible. Thanks to the Entertainment Software Charity, all the individuals and the charitable trusts that have made the GameOn website possible.
